When it rains, it pours.

It's weird. I started writing this on March 11, Wednesday - my Grandpa's birthday. It was going to be a happy birthday post but it turns out, it also became the day he died. He was 92.

He passed away on his very birthday, imagine that. We knew it was coming. It's terribly sad, but still - I feel a little prepared. After all, he told me he was going to die when he was 80. Then 85. Then 90. I feel like he's playing a trick on me.

Making funeral arrangements is overwhelming. Who wants to think about that stuff, especially when you are still grieving. We spent all afternoon at the mortuary - which is a Japanese mortuary- and I think they kind of looked at us funny because none of us, even O.G. read or speak Japanese. What can I say.

The best news we got that day was that the funeral director brings a box of mochi to the service as an offering, but then will pass it out at the end. HELL. YEAH. I jokingly told him that I wanted to special request pink mochi - and he wrote it down! I was cracking up. I'm sure O.G. is going to look at the paperwork and be like, 'WHAT.' Now I'm going to have to elbow all the old ladies at the funeral out of the way so I can get my mochi.

These past few weeks have been awful. I can't take much more bad news. I guess now we can finally taste that seahorse.

I'm very sorry about your Grandpa. I hope OG is coping okay :( When my Grandpa passed it was not a surprise, but still very hard nonetheless. I guess because he was the last one.

I hope things start getting better for you.

I'm so sorry about your ojiichan. You always make me laugh though...now I know to put down yomogi, kinako, and pink mochi in my will/instructions.

Thinking about you and your family. Um, is your MIL here too?

I'm so sorry about your grandfather. Making funeral arrangements in the midst of grief is a cruel joke. I remember trying to do that when my Dad died. Impossible.

There is a poetry to leaving this life on the day you came into it though. I hope he had a great life.

I feel for you, I lost my grandpa 2 weeks ago...he was 84...we knew it was coming too, but it was still so hard. My recommendation...keep the good memories, and laugh as much as you can.

I've never commented before on any of your blog posts but I felt the need to for this one.

My deepest condolences to you and your family for the loss of your grandfather. I too lost my Pappou (greek for grandfather) this past Saturday; he turned 85 two weeks ago. And just yesterday his older brother, age 90, also passed away.

Its times like these where you have to flood your mind with memories of them while they were still well. Think of them as being in the greatest place in the universe right now with any other members of your family who have passed and them all watching over you.

I enjoy following your blog. You and I have a lot in common as far as our love of crafts, favorite tv shows, things we find funny, I also have 2 kids, etc.....so I find it nice to follow your blog.

Last month my great grandmother passed away. She had just turned 99. The following week my mother had to have a heart stent and the following week my grandfather was in the hospital with his heart. He is with us, but his prognosis is grim. I am also battling a slew of health issues while caring for my 2year old twins. I have a great hubby and kids, but life is very hard right now. I am sorry you are feeling the sadness too.

I have to know what mochi is.

My condolences to you and your family. Even when it's expected, it's still hard.

Here's the plan, tell everyone that the mochi is tainted because the mortuary wants more business. Then it will be all YOURS!!! :)
