but you were up to your old tricks in chapters four, five and six
I told you there was a lot going on last weekend, I still haven't finished my writing all about it. On Sundays it's usually just the Kid and I - so I like to make sure that we do something art or creative related. Last Sunday we headed to the West Hollywood Book Fair. Now in it's 8th year, this is the first time I've gone. I always take the kids to the L.A. Times one, but it's so huge and also hot as hell. Hot weather + cranky children = me losing my mind.
Since this WeHo fair was in October the weather was PERFECT, and also the fair was a manageable size. There were plenty of stages, plenty of food and really nice comfortable lounge seating on real couches! I also liked it because it had a decent comics section with some pretty good panels. The Kid wouldn't allow me to go to the Mark Waid/Mike Mignola one so we headed off to the kid's area - it was 'his' day afterall. Damn.

He looked through the books and talked to the table people like a pro. I'm glad that he's getting over his shyness a bit, and I like to stand back and just watch him interact. We sat through some book readings, wanderings, collected free swag, etc. There were plenty of arts and crafts which made his day. The volunteers wanted me to do it too which I thought was ridiculous so I just made a Goth Crab.
Seeing as how L.A. has become the food truck mecca, there were a few parked around the fair. It was kind of nice not to eat that typical fair food, cheap Thai, hawaiian, bbq, etc. Same old, same old. We picked up a cupcake for later from the new Sprinkles-mobile (vanilla, of course) and then lunch at the Border Grill truck. I have been a fan of Two Hot Tamale chefs Milliken and Fenniger for years, no YEARSSS - so I couldn't wait to see what this truck had to offer.

I opted for the sweet corn tamale in a cup and the Kid got a cheese quesadilla (boring) but I also treated him to 'Churro Bites' - dulce de leche infused cinnamon churros donut holes, if you will. A genius idea I wish I had thought of first. They were sweet and tasty, though a tad bit undercooked for me. The Kid ate them up. I adored my tamale cup, sweet corn tamales are my favorite and the ones I usually get every Sunday at Farmer's Markets, but this was a fun take on it.
After we ate, I convinced the Kid to sit in on the one panel I wanted to hear - Bryan Lee O'Malley talking about Scott Pilgrim
. I love this series so much, and you could tell most of the audience were very familiar with the books as well. He talked about the evolution of the story, why the characters are drawn a certain way - the upcoming Michael Cera film version and finally the video game! The Kid kept himself busy by playing app games on my phone. It's fitting, really.
The Kid was dead tired so we headed out - on our way we bumped into Spider-man which was really cool til he shook the Kid's hand and said, "I work for tips." UH, no thanks. I'm fine if that's their job but I don't appreciate them saying it to the kid's faces. It ruins the illusion and just seems wrong. I whisked the Kid away and he said, "Do you think that was the real Spider-man?" and I said, "Probably not since he asked you for money - Spider-man wouldn't do that."And the Kid said, "Yeah, seemed like a guy in a costume to me." Illusion down the toilet.

Yum-O! All of that food looks delicious!!
Maybe the tip to Spider-Man would have been to not ask for handouts from kids.
Wow, the fair looks huge! Is O'Malley local?
@Darlene You know it was a good size. The L.A. Times one at UCLA is about...ten times that size. HA! Bryan Lee O'Malley flew in from Canada - that day!

I'm holding out for the grilled cheese truck!
Once again you prove there is NO WAY to ever get bored in this city and without spending a lot of money. I look at all you do and think about some of the other, different things I do at the same time, knowing there are even more simultaneous things and places that neither of us are hitting up. Sometimes it gets so hard to pick what to do because so much happens at once.
Just last night we went to a free event in Echo Park. When walking by, a friend was standing outside of the place next door and said, "Hey, are you here for my [free] event?" Oops, no. Sadly, we can't be in two places at once, though we could *hear* his coming through the wall! Ha!
