Kiss my grits

Restaurant week continues! And don't forget to enter the big Bento Supplies Giveaway on the recipes blog!

My mom has furlough days now, like most people in the country - which means I have someone else to hang out with to avoid my spiral into depression...yay? We went out looking for a place for brunch the other day and ended up at Tart.

Tart is a restaurant that is part of the old Farmer's Daughter Hotel at 3rd and Fairfax across from the Grove. Except...what it's most known for is that TONS of reality shows film here. You may remember this as the place that Spencer yelled at Heidi's mom. I do believe I stopped watching the Hills after that.

Despite that, it is a GREAT place for breakfast. A lovely interior dining and a great patio makes for a nice sunny brunch. I ordered a really delicious BLT with egg for breakfast, and my mom, who can't pass up grits - ordered creamy grits with chopped bacon and green onions.

One thing - the cook only knows how to make eggs one way. My fried egg was a bit overdone, but I'm fine with that. My mom's poached eggs? Whoa. Those things were HARD BOILED. She couldn't even eat them. Oh and when I went to open the ketchup bottle...it exploded on me. No one's fault, it felt like Candid Camera, but luckily I was wearing a red shirt. Despite those missteps, the rest of the food was really good. I even enjoyed the Banana Coffee Cake - now that's something!

Afterwards we walked across the street to stroll around the Farmer's Market. We checked out the caramel apples but we were too full from brunch. Looking at this picture, I could really go for one now, darn.

More pictures from Tart, here.

Ah, the bane of furlough days. I work at a public university and we're experiencing much the same. It's been interesting trying to figure out how to fill those days -- but going out to eat is nice on a slow weekday. One furlough day, I headed to the DC Studio in La Jolla. By far, my coolest furlough day yet.

Anyway, keep having fun!
