Black Canary: Bones crushes, flesh mushes, gore gushes - It's a dirtnap - Deathtra-a-a-p!

Btw - there's a giveaway over at the recipes blog...

Downtown again. Are you sick of it yet? Cause I never am. I find myself down here a few times a week despite not having worked downtown in well over 10 years. So weird.

I like to stop by Mendocino Farms for their amazing sandwiches. Always using seasonal and local food, it's hard not to get excited about their flavor combinations. Recently they expanded to open up a little (I mean LITTLE) eating area within the shop. But that's not the best part - oh, no - it's where they put the...

Boylan's soda fountain! What, what! Boylan's is bottled vintage soda pop, and it is good. Usually you have to pay upwards of $2 a bottle for one - it's totally worth it - but here at MF they charge you just $1! $1 for an artisinal soda fountain drink?? Wow. I witnessed many a customer standing at the fountain sampling every flavor, filling up a cup and coming back for more. I hope they don't change the price because I think it really helps converts people into drinking better quality soda.

Afterwards I did something I've been waiting to do for near ten years...ride Angel's Flight, again! I used to ride a lot actually, and it's been 9 years since they shut down Angel's Flight due to an unfortunate accident - in the meantime it underwent all sorts of retrofitting. Therefore, for 9 years you had to haul your lazy ass up actual stairs to get up from Hill Street. I'd rather pay a quarter. Ha!

Even though the ride is still only 25 cents, you can still die on it! As I witnessed when this guy got on at the bottom of Hill, too late, and the security doors closed on him. They wouldn't budge. He looked at us all helplessly as he stood on the edge of the platform and the car started to move. Now if you know anything about Angel's Flight, that is one STEEP track. I mean, the incline is intense. So instead of enjoying our 25 cent ride of death we were all yelling at the guy to just hold on and stared at him just hoping that he wouldn't fall. Thank goodness we made it all the way to the top, but he still could not get in! It took two riders to pull him in to his safety - since there is never anyone actually manning or watching the cars.
Now that I've scared the heck out of you...go ride it! It's loads of fun!...uh, yeah. In any event, it was nice to see an original part of Los Angeles back in action.

I know I will be back, I know I will ride it again, because 1. I am too lazy to walk up Bunker Hill and 2. $1 gourmet soda, need I say more?

Is there a warning sign before you pay that you could possibly die or lose a limb on the ride? I don't think I've given Boylan's a second look but I'll pick up a bottle and give it a try.

I'm sure that scene on Angel's Flight was horrific, but I couldn't stop laughing. Imagining him flailing out. Sorry, I'm going to hell.

Oh my gosh! I was on Angels Flight the other day and I had forgotten just how steep it was. They need an emergency button or something, seriously. I love downtown, too. I haven't been to MF yet, but now that I know they have that soda machine, I'm totally dragging my friend that works for MOCA and going!

Mendocino Farms sounds wonderful! Yum! Having worked Downtown for 6 years I never knew that was there...

Nice to know that Angels Flight is back up and running. I'll just know to be careful when I try it!

I'm downtown a lot lately too, but always learn about places I don't know about from you. Draft Boylan's? Must.go.there. But, probably won't for a while as they close at 3pm. I'm usually downtown at night.
