Rave Cinemas

Recently Rave Cinemas invited me to come take a look at their newly renovated theaters at Howard Hughes Center. Not only does the theater have a new look but there are new concessions, a Burger Bar and great summer deals on movies.
Seeing a movie in IMAX is a quality movie experience. The Rave IMAX theater holds 330 people and features a 70mm screen - the largest in the LA area. A theater that still uses film in this day and age is rare and the IMAX at Rave is so coveted that many local directors screen their movies there, just recently Christopher Nolan watched dailies of Dark Night in the theater.

Rave has great deals for this summer like $7 Tuesdays which includes free validated parking and all 2D theaters tickets are just $7. The deal that has me the most excited is the Marvel Movie Marathon, yes you can sit and watch Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America...all leading up to the big show, the Avengers! This is happening Thursday May 3 and starts at noon with Iron Man and ends at midnight with the Avengers. Whew, that's a long haul but for just $35 for all six movies on the big screen, it's a steal!

When my kids were younger I liked to take advantage of a weekday movie and this summer Rave offers Free Family Film Festivals Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10am. They show a lot of family friendly pics like Happy feet and Dolphin Tale, perfect for little ones. Admission is FREE!

Rave just installed Coca-Cola Freestyle machines at the concessions - I love these things! They are so fun to play with and the best part of course is CHOICE.

Over 100 drink options- you'll find drinks that aren't even on the market like Peach Sprite, Lime Coke and a variety of Fanta flavors.
The new Rave Burger Bar was delicious, the burgers are perfectly cooked and rival high end burger establishments. The menu choices gives guests a variety of options from salad to pizza to shrimp. While the price point is a bit high, the convenience of eating before the movie without rushing to the theater makes it a nice option for an evening out.

What I appreciated the most about Rave Cinemas was the attention to service and value for your money. The movie events and special discounts are definitely high on my list when I think about taking my family out for a day at the movies. I can't wait to come back and see all the summer blockbusters and play with that soda machine!

*full disclosure: Rave cinemas provided me with the movie experience but the opinions on this blog are my own.

Cupcake ATM!

I was in Beverly Hills today so I stopped by Sprinkles to could finally try out the Sprinkles cupcake ATM for myself!
While there was a huge line inside the store, luckily there was no line at the cupcake ATM! With no wait I got to take my time and play around with it. Super fun and easy to use, but sadly you can only buy one cupcake at a time. Not that I wanted hundreds of them...or did I?

Nestled between the Sprinkles cupcake shop and the Sprinkles Ice Cream store, the atm is available all night long for those late night cupcake cravings.

If you've seen the video you know how it works: choose a flavor from a screen, insert you credit card, then a robotic arm finds your cupcake and delivers it for you. Robots and cupcakes? Best day ever. As you can see the cupcake was perfect!
The Sprinkles cupcake ATM is a fun LA experience. Soon every city will have one of these and then cupcakes will become a natural form of currency! Well in my dreams, anyway.

MB Post

When I went to MB Post with my cousin it was more than just a night out, it was a like being in a time machine. Back in the day...waaaaay back - she used to work at MB Post...when it was a real post office!

That exact location was an actual post office/ice cream store called the Peppermint Post. My cousin worked there and I remember going down and watching her scoop ice cream and file mail into people's p.o. boxes.
The space is the same, just more opened up. The walls lined with post office decor is a nice homage to those of us who remember it from way back when. Even more touches - not only do you get a letter upon arrival but the towels in the bathroom are even in a mailbox.

The menu changes on a whim and Chef David LeFevre does an excellent job at creating a memorable menu out of local, seasonal ingredients.
Apologies for the dark photos, it was a late night dinner and the photos were more of an afterthought as I was enjoying the food. While menu changes daily but one standard is the Bacon Cheddar Buttermilk Biscuits with maple butter. As every food blogger before me has ever mentioned - these are to die for. Melt in your mouth, cheesy, delicious, I would come back just for these.

We also ordered charcuterie, green beans with crispy pork, scallops with dumplings, skirt steak - no I'm not hurrying to get through the menu, why do you ask -well, ok....
I am because I'm trying to get to the dessert which was 'The Elvis - a wonderful mess of chocolate pudding, peanut butter mousse and bacon brittle.' Now that's how you finish a meal.

There are so many new amazing places to eat by the beach (Standing Room?), the South Bay is becoming the hot place to be for fabulous dining.

Being back in that old space brought back a lot of memories. I can't wait to go back and now that they are open for brunch it's a perfect stop after a weekend walk down on the pier in Manhattan Beach. Those biscuits are calling my name from the beach.

Chimpanzee

Last week Disney invited me to a special screening of the new movie Chimpanzee.

The movie was at the El Capitan, one of my favorite theaters for Disney movies. They have a historic wurlitzer and the organist entertains the crowds before the movie. All Disney theme songs of course!
Before the movie the brought different animals on stage for the audience to see. I know my kids were loving it as was the audience by the oohs and aahs.

There was an artic fox, a porcupine and the Baby's fave: an alligator named Fluffy.
Finally it was time for Chimpazee. When the movie started the you were taken into the world of a little chimpanzee named Oscar and his life in the rainforest. The filmmakers truly captured the sights and sounds of these animals daily lives.

From finding daily food to the dangers that they encounter - the life of a chimpanzee can change from minute to minute. Watching Oscar try and survive tragedy through friendship was incredibly heartwarming.

My favorite part of the movie was the "Disney magic" - time lapse photography and playful music added to the fun and excitement of life in the rainforest. Tim Allen was the narrator and he even snuck in a trademark Tim the Tool Man Taylor Home Improvement grunt and the audience went wild.
Chimpanzee is a wonderful family movie that tells the story of Oscar the chimpanzee by showcasing the amazing lives of chimps and the beauty of the rainforest.

Keep your kids busy with this free chimpanzee activity book available for download here! The movie will be out in theaters on April 20th.

So say we all.

My friend Christy had an awesome Battlestar Galactica + tacos birthday party. Just those words - you know it's going to be amazing.

Seeing as how she was at the Geek Girls Craft Day, is it any wonder that she made her own Cylon Pinata?? Too awesome.

Not only that - for the dessert she tempered tons of chocolate to make dark chocolate BSG logos as well as an entire replica of the ship out of two pounds of chocolate. Now that's commitment.

For her birthday gift I had to stay with the theme, right? So I made her BSG chocolate dipped Oreos as cupcake toppers, of course. (recipe here).

Best. party. ever. Geek girls know how to party to a theme!

She's crafty

My friend Amy hosted a fabulous geeky crafting day. There was much laughter, lots of food, SO MANY DONUTS and I set up an Admiral Ackbar Snack Bar too! (check it out here) But that's not what we were there for - we were all business! Craftastic business.

What do you get when 15 geek girls get together and craft their hearts out?
Not one, not two, but three different kinds of R2-D2 shoes. From glittery flats, to heels to canvas slip-ons...
Lots of Doctor Who fans in the house: hand painted Tardis heels and glittery flats too...
Game of Thrones is definitely a fave show of geek girls (horse heart cupcakes, need I say more?) and these hand painted house of Targaryen flats came out beautifully...
Star Wars shoes! Painted Toms and glittered flats. Also some awesome decoupaged heels! These are made by cutting up old comics/books and using mod podge. Love it! (tutorial here)
We are all comic reading gals here: leather Batman on heels, glittered Robin symbol heels, stunning full glittered Dark Phoenix heels and even a nod to Adventure Time...
It wasn't all shoes - there were also some lovely comic book decoupaged bangle bracelets made...
As for me, I decided to repurpose a blouse and give a subtle but distinctive homage to the Battle of Yavin from Star Wars. ( how-to post HERE.)

It was great to see everyone sharing ideas and coming up with awesome creations in the end. Such a fabulous day of creativity!

Amy's recap here!

Happy Easter!

We spent Easter just like everyone else...

Lots of food.

Lots of family.

What - your Easter eggs aren't delivered by a life sized O.G. pinata? I thought that was an Easter tradition. Hm...

Joann's coupons

Psst...Wanna hear an awesome secret crafting tip? Of course you do!

The other day I was at Jo-Ann's buying some super-fantastic Star Wars fabric. (fyi - they have a ton of it) and per the usual I left the house without my coupons. The cashier saw my pain and asked if I had the Jo-Ann's app. I didn't even know there was a Joann's app. She told me I could download it right then and there in line.

Turns out if you get the app (it's free) coupons can be automatically loaded and are with you at all times. What the what?! This changes everything.

Now when I go to the store I don't need to clip things out, lose them in my car, find them at the bottom of my purse stuck to some dinner mints...no! I simply go to the app...

...go to coupons...

...add to wallet...

...and then show the cashier my phone and get my 40% off right then and there!

I'm excited! Can you tell I'm excited?! As a coupon connoisseur I can tell you that I'm pleased and so is my purse full of dinner mints.
